Savoring the Slow Life:
Embracing Mindfulness During the Summer
Do you remember when you were a kid? The summers seemed so long. Our summers now are often filled with work, home projects, taking kids to camps, and our normal everyday responsibilities. Before we know it, we are watching back-to-school commercials.
Remember to incorporate these three activities for mindfulness into your summer to enjoy the extended days fully.
Set a Summer Intention or Goal:
Summer often feels like it’s going by way too fast, but being intentional about how you spend your time helps create the illusion of having more of it. ‘Being intentional’ means consciously deciding how you want to spend your time and making choices that align with your values and goals. Take a few moments to set intentions you’ll be proud of having accomplished by the time the days get shorter again. Maybe you want to start a daily meditation practice, finish a few books on your nightstand, or go hiking to a few new spots; whatever you decide, directing your attention to a few specific goals will help you make the most of the summer months.
Spend the Extra Daylight Time Outside:
One of the best things about summer is how late it stays light outside. Make the most of these extra daylight hours by starting a summertime evening ritual—a backyard yoga session, walking around the neighborhood, or journaling outside. Carving out space to focus on yourself outdoors will reap so many benefits. Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and increase feelings of well-being. Slow down your mind by using your senses to soak it all in.
Wake Up A Little Earlier
Even waking up 5-10 minutes earlier than usual can be enough to carve out time for mindfulness. Spend those extra minutes of morning solitude meditating, doing breathing exercises, dancing, or stretching. It doesn’t matter what you do but how you do it. Try to be present and focused in the exact moment you’re in. ‘Redirecting your mind back to the present’ means noticing when your mind starts to wander and gently bringing your focus back to the present moment. When your mind starts to wander somewhere else—to the day’s to-do list or other random thoughts—gently redirect it back to the present.
We hope you and your families enjoy your summer!

Monday, July 8, 7:00 – 8:00 pm for 6 weeks
This 6-week music therapy group explores the intricate and therapeutic interconnection between songwriting and the related backdrop of history, society, and culture. Music and place have long been intertwined—and the particulars of place have given rise to some of our most memorable songs.
The group will explore this question through the American roots song tradition. We will play folk and blues songs and discuss lyrics from a mental health perspective, focusing on the visual sources for the songs and how they were written to express daily strife and relieve collective suffering.
The group offers a space to:
- Manage stress
- Increase wellness
- Explore emotions and feelings
- Provide emotional support
- Offer an outlet for self-expression
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Improve communication skills
- Creativity and imagination
- Compassionate connection
- Have fun
No previous music experience is necessary.
We are also pleased to inform you that insurance coverage is applicable for this program. Your payment responsibilities will be based on the details of your insurance plan, including coverage limits, deductibles, and copayments, as applicable.
